A dog comes when called.
A cat does not.
Most of us were sold a dog. Whistle, and motivation arrives, tail wagging, ready to work. So when it does not come, we assume something is broken in us.
Nothing is broken. You simply have a cat.
What the cat teaches
Motivation moves on its own terms. It appears when it pleases. It naps in the sun. It disappears for a week and returns like nothing happened.
You cannot summon it. You can only make a home it wants to visit.
This is good news, quietly. It means the days you did not feel like it were never a failure of character. The cat was just out.
Stop waiting to be called
If you build your life around the dog, you wait. You wait to feel ready. You wait for the surge. And the waiting becomes the habit.
Instead, build systems that do not ask the cat’s permission.
A system is a promise you keep to yourself when the feeling is gone.
The feeling is a guest. The system is the house.
Tiny show-up cues
You do not need willpower. You need a cue so small that refusing it feels sillier than doing it.
- Shoes by the door. The walk starts before you decide to walk.
- Water glass on the nightstand. Morning care, already arranged.
- One page open. Not the whole book. One page.
- Mat left unrolled. The stretch is waiting for you, not the other way around.
Notice the pattern. Each cue removes a decision. The cat can nap all it likes. The house still runs.
Shrink the ask
When motivation is gone, lower the bar until you can step over it.
- Name the thing you keep avoiding.
- Make it laughably small. Two minutes. One rep. A single line.
- Do only that. Let anything more be a gift, not a requirement.
Two minutes of movement is not a compromise. It is a vote. You are telling yourself, quietly, that you are the kind of person who shows up.
Often the cat wanders back once the work has already begun. It likes to look like the whole thing was its idea.
Let it leave without panic
Some days you will do the small thing and feel nothing. No spark. No lift.
Good. That is the whole point.
You showed up without the feeling. You proved you do not need it. This is how trust in yourself is built, one unglamorous morning at a time.
Do not chase a cat that has left the room. Chasing only sends it further. Set the food down and go about your day.
A gentle Friday practice
Before the weekend arrives, choose one cue for next week.
Just one. Place it somewhere you will see it. The shoes. The glass. The open page.
Then forget about feeling ready. Ready is a cat, and cats keep their own calendars.

The quiet truth
You were never lazy. You were waiting for a dog that was always a cat.
Build the house. Set out the small cues. Do the two-minute thing.
And when motivation strolls back in, blinking, acting like it never left, you can smile.
You did not need it after all.
