Some nights, the mind keeps working after the body has stopped.
You lie down. The room is dark. And still the thoughts arrive, one after another, asking to be solved.
Tonight, try something smaller than a routine. Two minutes. Three quiet steps.
Why two minutes is enough
A wind-down does not need to be long. It needs to be clear.
You are not trying to fix the day. You are only signaling to yourself that the day is done.
Short is easier to keep. And a ritual you keep is worth more than one you admire and abandon.
The three steps
1. Dim
Lower the light before you lower your head.
Turn off the overhead. Leave one soft lamp, or none. Let the room grow dim around you.
Screens can wait until morning. If you can, set the phone somewhere you cannot reach without standing.
Darkness is a message the body understands without words.
2. Breathe
Sit or lie down. Let your shoulders drop.
Breathe in slowly. Then breathe out, longer than you breathed in.
Do this a few times. Nothing forced. Just a gentle lengthening of the exhale.
- In, for a count of four.
- Out, for a count of six.
- Again, until your body feels a little heavier.
The long exhale is where the settling happens. Stay there.
3. Park one worry
Keep a small notebook and pen beside the bed.
Before you close your eyes, write down one thing. The thought that keeps circling. The task you are afraid to forget.
One line is enough. You are not solving it. You are setting it down.
The page will hold it. You do not have to.
When the worry returns in the dark, you can answer it quietly: it is written down. It will still be there tomorrow.
Making it easy to keep
Leave the notebook open. Leave the lamp within reach. Remove the small frictions that talk you out of it.
If you miss a night, begin again the next. The ritual is not fragile. It simply waits for you.
Let this be a Friday practice first, if that helps. The end of a week is a natural place to put things down.
What you might notice
Not sleep, exactly. Not right away.
You might notice the gap between lying down and thinking. A little more space there.
You might notice that the same worry, once written, loses some of its weight.
You might notice you reach for the phone less.
Small changes. Let them be small. They add up on their own.
